To Lampedusa and Beyond – Refugee Journeys in the 21st Century
Shire Hall Museum
Culture
UNTIL Thursday 8th December
What leads refugees to undertake long risky journeys that sometimes end in tragedy? What causes displacement from their homes and countries of origin? Where do they go – and what happens en route to states such as the UK in which they hope for asylum?
Philip Marfleet discusses the "zones of crisis" from which tens of millions of people are displaced each year. He asks why some journeys end in mass drownings in the Mediterranean and the English Channel, and what happens to those who reach the shores of Europe.
