We have introduced a business of the week article, highlighting a local, independent business featured on our local list.

This week it is Dodgson's of Dorchester.

The traditional DIY shop has been a part of Dorchester for decades - 60 to be exact - and has remained in South Street for all that time.

Glenn House has been its owner for more than 15 years.

He said: "Mr Dodgson's father started it in 1961, so it's our 60th year this year - which is an achievement in itself.

"His father retired and Mr Dodgson took on the business and I started working for him in 1980. I bought the business from him in 2005 and have had the business ever since.

"We were in what is Toymaster and he bought this one in 2002, so still on the high street not far from where it began."

Dodgson's of Dorchester survived the coronavirus pandemic and were able to open during the lockdowns, operating from the front door of the shop.

"It wasn't the best for those wanting to browse but it's been fine and we stayed open all through lockdowns. We kept everyone safe and secure, customers and staff."

The shop, which was voted Dorchester's Favourite Business in the Dorchester BID awards in 2019, offers household materials, tools, general DIY and can also cut wood to size and can also provide custom made slate signs.

It is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Find more information by following Dodgson's of Dorchester on Facebook.
