Dorchester walk of the month: Charminster loop

By Lottie Welch

8th Dec 2021 | Local News

Every month we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you will be able to receive the walk first and be able to enjoy it over the weekend.

This month's walk in Charminster takes just under an hour and is around two miles. It is of east level walking.

Start at the Broken Cross junction with Westleaze and walk left out of it to walk towards the main road. At the main road, cross it and turn left before going down the footpath signposted 'Higher Burton' on your right.

Continue straight and when you get to a stile, go over it but continue straight, don't turn left, going into a field and walking up the left-hand side. Follow the path round to the left through a small gate and continue up.

When you get to small lane, turn right. When the path reaches a road, cross it and go down the path opposite and through the gate up the steps. Follow the path through the field.

When you reach the road, cross it and turn right into Ilchester Estates, following the sign for 'East Hill'. Follow the road around the barn and follow the signs to 'Charminster' into the field on your right.

At the end of the field, go through the gate and follow the path up the field. At the end of this field, go through the gate in the left-hand corner.

When the path meets a lane, cross over it to go down the footpath opposite. When the footpath comes to a road, turn right and follow it round to the right before following it round to the left and back to the start.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.

Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.

Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
