A Dorset centre dedicated to D-Day will be able to reopen its doors in time for Second World War invasion's anniversary.

Visitors to Castletown D-Day Centre will be able to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Normandy landings on June 6 at the award-winning visitor attraction as indoor attractions can open from Monday, May 17.

The D-Day centre on Portland will welcome back visitors from Wednesday, May 19 and staff and volunteers are gearing up for a bumper summer.

Castletown D-Day Centre offers an immersive experience for both young and old - with dedicated and passionate staff and volunteers wearing military uniform - to discover the important role Portland played during the northern France invasion, including a recreation of the dockyard from where thousands of American troops departed in 1944.

Manager John Davis said: "Castletown D-Day Centre is a moving tribute, not only to the bravery of the thousands of troops who defended our freedom, but also to the people of Weymouth and Portland.

"The centre is a fantastic family visitor attraction that offers an unrivalled opportunity to take a trip back in time to discover the great wartime sacrifice made by a heroic generation."

There will be new displays for the 2021 opening and the centre features a range of artefacts and vehicles, which visitors can get hands on with, climb on the vehicles and get dressed up.

On the first Saturday after opening (May 24) visitors will also be able to admire and look around a collection of pre-war and wartime vintage cars from Transport of Yesteryear.

The attraction is looking for volunteers to join its ranks and help with a variety of roles, from driving the vehicles and hoisting the flags, to welcoming visitors, delivering tours and much more.

From Wednesday, May 19, Castletown D-Day Centre will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
