Walk of the week: Riverside stroll and Ratty's Trail

Every week we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

Our second walk of the week is a short riverside walk which takes in Ratty's Trail. It was an easy walking route and was just over two miles, taking around 45 minutes.
Starting at the Town Pump in South Street, turn right onto High East Street and cross the road going over to John Edwards hairdresser, continuing to walk done the street.
Immediately after a bridge, turn left just before the London Road sign and walk along the river. After a short while there will be a boardwalk to your right which goes into the Riverside Reserve Link. It doesn't take long to follow the path around it and you come back out onto the path by the river.
When you get back to the river path, continue along it past some allotments. When you get to a bridge on your left and John's Pond on your right, turn right and carry on straight, past another bridge on your left which goes to the Sun Inn.
Go over the blue bridge and continue straight over two very small bridges. After the second bridge, turn right through a gate. After going through the next gat and coming to a lane, turn right.
Follow the land around to the left and it will turn into a footpath. Continue along this path through another gate and at the following gate, continue walking straight, passing a barn on your right.
After a large metal gate, turn right, going up a lane with a house on the left and taking the footpath on the right opposite the house. Follow this path all the way to Grey's Bridge where you will come to a road. Take care as there is no pavement on this side of the road.
Turn right onto London Road and walk up into the town.
Cross the road again at John Edwards and go down South Street on the left, back to the Town Pump.
This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.
