Egg and spoon races, sack races and target throwing were all enjoyed by staff, residents, family and friends when sports day came to Cheriton Care Home.

The home in Dorchester hosted the fun day as part of the national Care Home Open Week celebrations from June 27 to July 3.

All got into the spirit of the games, with some competitiveness coming out, before manager Denise Chrippes handed out medals and residents enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea and cake.

Resident Madeleane Nock thoroughly enjoyed the sports day and said: "It was fantastic, great fun and very well organised - definitely as good as the Olympics I'd say."

And to make the day even better, two very special visitors to the home in the form of giant rabbits delighted guests and residents.

Denise Chrippes, Cheriton Care Home manager, said: "There's been thrills and spills during what has been a wonderful afternoon with relatives, residents, friends and our care team all getting involved in the races and enjoying a real sense of achievement."

It was a week full of events at the Weymouth Avenue home during the open week, including music and entertainment, trips out and about, arts and crafts and a royal cream tea party.

Johanna Casemore, activities co-ordinator who helped organise the events, said: "We've had such challenging times during Covid and we just need to have a nice time, let them have a bit of fun - it's been so restricted.

"Just to see them smile and see them engaging is lovely.

"We've got a few new residents so we want to show them what we've got and what we do. It's not all about sitting, as we also go out to Brewery Square, the market - they love it. It gives them a chance to meet new people and find talents they didn't know they had."

The national week, organised by the Championing Social Care charity, gives care homes the opportunity to connect with their local communities, challenge misconceptions about care, and showcase their facilities and activities.
