Council calls for help as it combats recycling site break-ins

DORSET Council has made a call for some pro-active support from residents as it seeks to stop troublesome break-ins at its Dorchester household recycling centre.
The site, and a sister one in Weymouth, have been subject to a number of raids, with damage caused and property stolen.
A police investigation is underway and one suspect has already been identified through CCTV images.
A spokesperson for the council said: "We've had a small number of break-ins recently at our Household Recycling Centres in Weymouth and Dorchester, causing damage and disruption.
"Our priority is keeping people safe. Unsupervised recycling centres are extremely hazardous environments with dangerous materials and heavy machinery. Unauthorised access - especially after hours - can lead to serious injury.
"All incidents are with Dorset Police and under active investigation. One individual has already been identified from CCTV footage shared with police.
"We've repaired the damage, cleared up the mess, and made sure sites are safe so services can keep running for everyone. Thank you for helping prevent harm and protect an essential community facility."
The council is also calling on members of the public to help prevent further problems.
It is asking parents and carers to talk with young people about why recycling centres are only safe when used correctly during opening hours, with staff present.
People are also urged not to directly intervene if they see suspicious activity but instead report it to Dorset Police via official channels (online or by calling 101).
It adds: "Always dial 999 in an emergency."
