You will need to put your clocks forward an hour as British Summer time begins tomorrow (Sunday).

Clocks go forward at 1am to 2am on the final Sunday in March and switching from Greenwich Mean Time, meaning that although we lose an hour, it will be lighter in the evenings.

Many believe it was brought in to enable farming to continue later into the evening.

However, the idea for changing clocks really took off due to builder William Willett who apparently campaigned to have the clocks changed as he was annoyed the sun going down would cut into his golfing, so he wanted more light in the evening.

He didn't get it made into law and died I 1915, but in 1916 during the First World War, the German army turned the clocks forward in the spring as a way of conserving energy. Many European governments followed suit shortly afterwards, including the UK.

And it has been law ever since.

There are mixed opinions on whether it should stay, with some arguing it upsets the natural rhythm of sleep, but others stating the darker mornings in winter are unsafe, for example on the roads and with children going to school, and some industries, like farming, rely on more lighter hours to work.

The clocks will go back an hour on the last Sunday in October, giving us an extra hour.
