Dorchester Roman Tours are back up and running with some shiny new appearances and special routes.

Find out about the fascinating history of Dorchester with tours taking place seven days a week led by a very knowledgeable Roman soldier.

Callum Jenkins-Teague, lead tour guide, said: "Now we reflect the true era of Roman Dorchester, which was primarily a late Roman town with the remains being dated back to the late 2nd to 4th century - the golden age of Roman Britannia. Gone is the ancient Hollywood aspect of Roman soldiers replaced with the more Greek, Eastern and Germanic approaches which the Romans take on in the later centuries.

"All of our equipment is authentic and taken from artistic and excavated sources to be re-worn and seen as they would've been had they been alive today."

The tours start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, lasting 45 minutes to one hour, and cost £12 for adults and £6 for children under 12. Children under six go free.

The West Gate tour covers the story of Durnovaria, how it was started and takes people on a walk through the town, covering the Roman fortifications to end at the UK's best preserved Roman town house.

Callum added: "Later, coming soon, to coincide with the re-opening of Dorset Museum, we will be offering a museum tour add-on, which covers the internal Roman and ancient exhibit of the museum. Entrance fee to the museum is covered in the process and guests will be able to see the rest of the museum in their own time when the tour finishes."

This tour will run for two hours and prices will be updated to show the add-on.

After June 28, when initial refurbishment works have been completed at the Roman Town House, groups will be able to enjoy a special West Gate tour that will include an internal tour of the town house. Guests will be taken inside to see unhindered the mosaics and to see them up close.

The price will be £15 for adults and £6 for children. As it is a premium tour, they can only run the interior tour with a minimum of six adults and a maximum of 15.

Callum said: "We will later be offering a top-class quality tour that will include our West Gate tour, the Roman Town House interior tour and Dorset Museum.

"We call this Odyssey The Augustus tour. It will be for large groups wanting to have the whole experience. This tour would be a three-hour minimum tour. Prices to be updated as we are in talks with the museum.

"Hopefully that is something extra we have included as it's been a long wait to get back to touring the town."
