A taxi firm has been given permission to use a former shop unit at the bottom of Dorchester's Hardye Arcade for an office.
There was some opposition to the change at a town council planning committee meeting with councillors expressing fears that the use would result in all the spaces set aside for taxis, opposite the office, being permanently used by the firm.
But former mayor and retired town taxi driver Tim Harries said the position would be no different than it always had been – with any taxis able to use the available spaces on a first-come, first-served basis.
After his intervention the council decided to raise no objection.
The consent for the change of use was granted by Dorset Council to Mr Damon Clarke of Damos Taxis.
The small office provides a space for drivers and customers to wait.
