Dorchester walk of the week: Four-mile loop in the countryside

We have introduced a walk of the week for our newsletter subscribers to enjoy over the weekend.
Each Friday we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.
This week's walk is a four-mile loop in Dorchester, taking around on hour and 50 minutes. There is some walking on the road.
Start in Lubbecke Way and go under the road bridge before going down the small footpath on your right opposite the far entrance to the allotments. Follow it along - be very careful crossing the train tracks - and join the road continuing straight.
You will pass by Max Gate on your right, the home designed by Thomas Hardy. You can book in advance to have a guided tour around the property.
When you get to the roundabout, cross the road with it on your right and take the shaded footpath opposite, following it round to the left. Stay left when the path reaches a field. Keep following it and it will meet another field. Continue straight and when it bends to the right, go straight down a small path into woodland and go through the metal gate.
When the path meets a road, turn left and at the end of the road, turn right. The verge was overgrown and uneven under foot but mostly walkable, but do take extra care walking along the side of the road.
Just after a layby and field entrance on your right there will be a footpath on the left, go down it and go left through the field, sticking to the small path between crops. Carry on to the end of the field and turn left to go through a green metal gate. Follow the path through the next field and go through another green gate into another field, following the path along the edge of the field. Continue along this path, going past a green gate on your right.
The path will meet a road, cross it and go down the path opposite. When the path meets a house, follow the path round to the left where the path meets a track.
Where the path meets a road, continue straight and turn left at the church. Walk along the road and just after the bridge, go down the footpath on your left. Follow the path through the field to the end and on the right there will be a cut through to the next field. It is very muddy here as there are cows in the field.
Go diagonally left through the field and out through a kissing gate. Where you meet the road, turn left and the turn right down the path signposted 'Dorchester'. Keep following this path and you will come out at the recycling centre. Follow the road down and you will arrive back at the start
This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.
Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.
Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
