Dorset TUC is inviting everyone to join them to celebrate May Day with music, speakers and much more this year.

Dorset TUC is organsing a free May Day Celebration in Dorchester's Borough Gardens for International Workers Day on Sunday, May 1. The event runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm and will feature bands, poets, speakers, food and drink along with stalls and more. Music on the day will be provided by local bands and musicians including Pychadelephant, The Darwins, Shannon White, Dylan Ross, Mustafa Musto and Tijuana - with it all kicking off with Bridport based choir Dorset Red.

Jenny Lennon-Wood, chairman of Dorset TUC, extended a warm welcome to everyone to come along and enjoy themselves on the day. She said: "May Day is seen by millions of people across the world as a day to celebrate workers solidarity. Dorset TUC wanted to hold a free family friendly event that highlights the role of key workers over recent years, and thank them for their work.

"We are inviting everyone, from across Dorset and beyond, to come along and join us."

John Burbridge from Unite's Tolpuddle branch added: "Dorset is the birthplace of rural trade unionism, and what better place to have a free day out to celebrate May Day and the role of food workers in keeping the country going throughout the pandemic."

As well as music there will be speakers including Becky Brookman from Dorset Unison, Giovanna Lewis from Dorset Climate Action, Dave Chapple from Bridgwater TUC and Mark Chutter, President of NEU Dorset District.

There will also be food available from Eat the Rainbow, Fire in the Shire and Tea Totaler along with a fully stocked bar from the Convivial Rabbit.

Amanda Brown, Dorset Unison branch chairman summed up saying; "The key workers in the NHS, food sector, transport and other areas have kept Britain running, and we want to celebrate their work, determination and courage with a chance to dance, be inspired and gather with friends.

"May Day in Borough Gardens will be a wonderful day, and we'd love you to join us."

The Dorset TUC celebration of May Day takes place on Sunday, May 1 from 10.30am to 4.30pm in Dorchester's Borough Gardens and is free. For information and details contact Jenny Lennon-Wood on [email protected]
