Earth Day successfully celebrated in Dorchester

Local News by Lottie Welch 25th Apr 2022

Earth Day was well and truly marked in Dorchester with an afternoon packed full of entertainment and things to do.

Officially opened by Dorchester mayor, Gareth Jones, the event welcomed hundreds of people throughout the afternoon.

Stalls of local groups and organisations lined the Great Field in Poundbury, including Litter Free Dorset, Dorchester Repair Café, The Embroidery Barn, Hedgehog Friendly Dorchester, Dorset Recycle, Dorset CPRE and many more.

There was also a clothes swap and free reusable nappies, with guests also able to get creative with Dorset Scrap Store, discover exotic animals, join in with a creative solar workshop from Dorset Community Energy and much more.

There was entertainment from the world's first wheelbarrow disco, Pop Club, Shannon White, Viva Choir and Damaris Fowler, as well as guest speakers.

Earth Day - celebrated on April 22 - marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. It puts environmental concerns on the front page, discovering what is being done to protect the planet and what needs to be done.
