Exciting entertainment and a delicious dinner were on offer last week at the annual murder mystery night hosted by The Club House in West Bexington.
Making the most of its seafront location on Chesil Beach, the evening started with welcome drinks in a marquee on the terrace where clues were already laid out for a night of mystery.
We soon moved inside to the elegant Art Deco restaurant – my first visit to The Club House and definitely keen to return to enjoy daytime views across Lyme Bay.
The theme of the night being 'Death On An Ocean Wave', the restaurant took on the set of a cruise ship filled with Hollywood's greats for the murder mystery, and we were all kept on tenterhooks until the very end.
I enjoyed a delicious diner of fresh salmon gravlax with Hive Beach vodka, honey and dill, rye crisps, Tamrisk farm salad and mustard dressing; followed by a tasty winter risotto of roasted butternut squash, grilled goat's cheese, shaved truffle with crispy kale sage leaves and toasted pine nuts; and a delectable dessert of dark orange chocolate tart with blood orange sorbet and raspberry coulis.
Meanwhile, my guests both tucked into braised pork cheek with black pudding crumbs pickled apple, cracking and crispy leeks; and then braised shot rib with pom purée, braised cabbage and leeks in a red wine sauce.
They also enjoyed a honeycomb cheesecake and a selection of farmhouse cheeses to finish.
But alongside the sumptuous dinner, the entertainment was exceptional, with charming characters offering us clues and acting out scenes amid the three courses – and three murders!
I can't say my friends and I managed to solve the mystery but we had endless fun comparing our elaborate theories on the night.
Eventually, we were taken back out to the marquee for the killers to be revealed and a bottle of something sparkling was presented to the clever guest who got it spot on.
The Club House has plenty going on this festive season, including a Boxing Day lunch menu showing off the best of local seafood and something a little different to the traditional Christmas dishes.
It will also be open for breakfast and lunch on New Year's Eve and for Sunday lunch on New Year's Day with two courses for £20.
