A loud bang was felt across Dorset and further afield this afternoon.

At around 3pm residents heard and felt the boom, with some writing on social media that their homes shook.

But it is not yet known what it was.

Dorset Police said it "did not have any incidents/records on its logs relating to this'.

The BBC reported a Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said the noise was not believed to be linked to any RAF aircraft.

There are also reports of a meteor being spotted over Jersey and that this may have had something to do with the noise.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) tweeted: "BGS has no evidence of any seismic event in the area at the approximate time of 15:00 today.

"However, the descriptions provided by members of the public are consistent with those typically experienced by a sonic boom."

More to follow.
