Generous shoppers in Dorchester have raised more than £500 for Christian Aid in one day.

The charity held its annual one-day street collection and with the Coronavirus pandemic cancelling Christian Aid Week house to house collections and postponing other events until the autumn, it is one of the key events this year.

Tony Boyden, Dorchester and District Christian Aid chairman, was delighted that £531 had been raised through the socially distanced street collection in South Street.

He said: "The poorest nations in the world are struggling with climate change and poverty and now have Covid on top of it and are least to be able to cope with it, so we are trying our very best to raise money in all ways as possibly can.

"It's wonderful that there are so many people across our churches in Dorchester who are involved in Christian Aid and I am very grateful to everyone who gave up their time to help with the collection."

This year's Christian Aid Week themes have been how climate change has been affecting the very poorest in society in Kenya and how the ongoing Covid epidemic continues to wreak havoc in India. The charity is involved with partners on the ground to help mitigate the changing climate by building wells and dams to store water in Kenya and is providing ongoing financial support to communities affected by Covid in India.
