History repeats itself as the Squib National Championships return to Weymouth this summer. 

The first ever Squib Class Championships took place in the bay 43 years ago and We Are Weymouth Business Improvement District (BID) is excited to welcome the class back once again from June 25 to 30.

The BID is sponsoring this event, welcoming helms, crew and families from 70 boats. 

Entries for the championships come from all around the UK and Ireland and attracts both sailors and their families, being as much a social event as a competitive one.

Weymouth is seen as an ideal location because of its abundance of nightlife and other attractions as well as conveniently located accommodation.

Dawn Rondeau, chief operations officer at We Are Weymouth (BID) commented: "Sailing is at the heart of Weymouth in many ways, from the sailing clubs, our marina filled with boats, to the men and women that work on the water and contribute so much to our economy. 

"We're really proud to support the Squib National Championships and host them here in Weymouth - especially given that the first ever Squib championships took place here. 

"We know that bringing competitors into the town and showing all Weymouth has to offer will benefit our community. We wish all those competing the best of luck and encourage them to explore the town when the racing is finished!"

Squibs are the biggest keelboat class in the UK and are a familiar sight in Weymouth. The local fleet are seen sailing with their distinctive red sails two or three times a week during the season, which runs from Easter until Boxing Day

Weymouth bay provides one of the best yacht racing courses in the world, with its open water and consistent winds. Weymouth Sailing Club also has a reputation and track record for staging large scale events.

Weymouth Sailing Club commodore, Tim Day, said: "Having the backing of We Are Weymouth has given us the confidence to expand the entries and make this an even bigger event than last time.

"We have wonderful facilities here and a great group of volunteers to run the show. Given the early registration of so many boats, I can say with confidence that this will be a great success and one that can only attract more sailors to Weymouth in the future."
