Children and staff at The Prince of Wales School in Dorchester dressed in yellow for the first ever 'United Colours of POW' event on Friday.

It's set to be a weekly event to unite the school when they can't all be together.

Deputy headteacher Ann Johnson said: "The weekly lockdown event will take place each and every Friday until our community can be back together again.

"It's a non-school uniform event for all pupils and staff with an optional colour scheme that will only be decided at 4pm the day before. The colour is picked at random, using a giant spinning colour wheel, live on our 'Today at POW' broadcasts."

Tracy Brooker, emotional literacy support assistants (ELSA) lead, said: "The challenge for pupils and staff is to find something they already have at home to wear the next day in the chosen colour.

"If pupils or staff haven't got anything available, fear not, they can still take part in the non-school uniform day in any colour."

Headteacher Gary Spracklen said it was important that everyone stays positive at this challenging time.

He added: "Our 'United Colours of POW' event is an opportunity to remember that we are all in this together.

"The event sits alongside a huge range of additional activities that the school is doing to support its community at this time, including on-site provision for the children of key workers and vulnerable children, weekly phone calls home to all pupils, food parcels, physical resource deliveries, the loan of school equipment - including desks, chairs and Chromebooks - and virtual ELSA sessions, where required."
