A Dorchester-based teenage refugee from Ukraine has been sharing her passion for tennis with the next generation.

Yana discovered a love for tennis when taking part in the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme back in 2021, when her mother enrolled her in holiday sessions with Dorchester Tennis Club.

Arriving in the UK, Yana quickly felt welcomed through these sessions, which significantly supported her settlement process.

Recognising her potential, the coaches at Dorchester Tennis Club encouraged Yana to join their club.

Reflecting on her experience, Yana expressed: "I had played tennis before, but I really progressed once I got involved with the club."

With her mother securing a job, Yana was able to afford one-to-one tennis lessons, further enhancing her skills.

In the following year, Yana seized the opportunity to compete internationally with the club, participating in tournaments in Holland and Belgium.

She fondly recalls the experience, saying, "It was so much fun to travel there with my friends. I have some incredible memories."

During Christmas holidays of 2023, Yana decided to give back to the community by assisting with sports sessions at Sunninghill School in Dorchester.

All the children present that booked through the HAF programme allowing them the same free access she was given in 2021, and Yana effortlessly connects with them, showcasing her rapport and enthusiasm.

Coach Michael Willlemse commends her, stating, "She's a great help and an inspiration to the children. We're really proud of what she has achieved."

Theresa Leavy Corporate Director for Children Services, said: "It's so lovely to hear about Yana's story, and everything she's doing for children in Dorset.

"If your children are eligible for free school meals, we'd like to encourage you to sign them up to take part in the HAF programme."

The HAF programme will run again during the Easter holidays, where both our children who are part of the refugee resettlement programme as well those who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals will have access to a wide variety of free enriching activities and nutritious meals.
