The 2021 Dorset Knob Throwing and Frome Valley Food Festival will not take place but, after a two-year break, will return to its former home in Cattistock next year.
The decision was made due to the current Covid-19 restrictions and how they are anticipated to continue.
The committee took the view that to continue in these circumstances could put people's lives at risk and felt that they had a duty of care towards all visitors.
Ian Gregory, chairman of the Dorset Knob Throwing Committee, said: "The essence and joy of Dorset Knob Throwing is that it is fun - great fun. Without the freedom to mix openly, the spontaneity and appeal of this event will be lost.
"But we will be back. Dorset Knob Throwing is a zany, quintessentially British event which has caught the public imagination. It is great fun and hugely enjoyed by all involved - over 8,000 attended last time.
"With Moores Biscuits as our principal sponsor and supplier of those essential Dorset Knobs, we are hugely looking forward to the future. Our other wonderful supporters, including Dorset Tea, St James's Place Wealth Management and Cornish Mutual Insurance, are working with us to ensure a successful and reinvigorated event in Cattistock in 2022."
Talks for digital safe alternatives for this year's event are ongoing.
