All Weekend: Home of Hillforts & Henges
Following the success of last year's event, Home of Hillforts & Henges is back this summer, taking place in Dorchester from July 28 to 30.
Celebrating a landscape rich in earthworks and the people that have lived here for more than 6,000 years, activities will again take place at multiple locations across the town, offering a great opportunity to find out more about Dorchester's Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age heritage.
There will be lectures, guided walks and other activities, concluding with an epic day of discovery and fun at Maumbury Rings with HengeFest on Sunday, July 30 – a free family day out inside the ancient monument.
All Weekend: Smugglers: Beneath the Surface
A summer exhibition at Shire Hall Museum in Dorchester will explore the real people and history behind Dorset's tales of smuggling.
In the 18th and 19th century, Dorset was home to some of Britain's most notorious smugglers. Across the coastline, hundreds of people were secretly moving good in and out of the country for profit.
The exhibition opened this week and will be available t visit at Shire Hall Museum until September 16.
Saturday: Borough Gardens Summer Sessions
Borough Gardens Summer Sessions offers free live music and events throughout the season, this week with "velvet vice" Tony Lowe with swing classics and sing-along numbers, performing from 2pm on Saturday, July 29.
Sunday: A Summer Sunday with Fake Thackray
John Watterson, aka 'Fake Thackray', presents 'Beware of the Bull' - an afternoon of the wonderful songs of Jake Thackray, with anecdotes and readings from the first ever biography of the Yorkshire chansonnier. This will be held at Whitcombe Manor with gates opening at 12noon for a lunchtime, open-air performance.
