Dorchester town crier Alistair Chisholm has been crowned national champion for a record-equalling eleventh time.

Mr Chisholm won the latest national competition in Hastings, East Sussex, becoming only the second person to win the title 11 times.

He said he was "chuffed" to match the record of Ben Johnson of Fowey, Cornwall, set in the 1950s.

Mr Chisholm also won a "silent" town crier contest in May, which was judged on written entries due to coronavirus restrictions.

Mr Chisholm's 'home cry' at this year's national competition told the story of Dorset's county town Dorchester in 120 words.

The second round of the competition was about Great British heroes and Mr Chisholm chose to speak about George Loveless, leader of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

Mr Chisholm is now hoping to break the record with a twelfth win next year.

The National Town Criers Championship is held annually as part of Hastings Week, which marks the Saxon defeat by the Normans at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066.
