The first Super Tourist Information Point (TIP) has been officially opened in Dorchester Post Office.

Dorchester BID set up the TIP initiative initially with lots of locations across town where you can pick up leaflets and information about visiting Dorchester. A spokesman said: "We are so grateful to these premises for helping tourists out and promoting what Dorchester has to offer. What makes a Super TIP different is the amount of information on offer."

Dorchester's Tourist Information Centre in the library in South Walks House closed last year.

David Prince and the team at Dorchester Post Office have dedicated a substantial area of the shop to leaflets, what's on information and Dorchester-related gifts.

The post office is receiving no financial incentive to carry out the role but Dorchester Town Council and Dorchester BID have been supporting the team in collecting materials and providing information.

The Super TIP was officially opened on February 9 by the mayor, councillor Gareth Jones, and mayoress of Dorchester. Cllr Jones said: "We are hugely grateful to the post office for taking on this voluntary role. It is fantastic to have a dedicated location in town where visitors can pick up leaflets and find out about events."

The new Discover Dorchester app and website created by Dorchester Town Council, Dorchester BID and the tourism partnership have a wealth of useful information for visitors that post office staff will be using to signpost visitors.

The tourism partnership has also just published and printed a new leaflet for Dorchester highlighting attractions, free places to visit, local amenities and facilities. It has a map of Dorchester town centre and Poundbury too and will be available to pick up at the new Super TIP.

Almost directly across the road from Dorchester Post Office, one of the shops has been given a facelift by Dorchester Town Council using money from the Welcome Back Fund, which is money from the European Regional Development Fund. The windows and fascia of the old Better Hearing shop have been cleaned and replaced with new signage with useful tourist information for Dorchester.
