Nearly £2,000 has been donated to enable several theatre performances for young people with profound mental and learning difficulties.

Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Club has donated £1,700 to Dorchester Arts following its successful Christmas fundraising drive to benefit local causes.

Two sold-out performances by specialist theatre company Frozen Light of its show '2065' is taking place this week and performances by another company - Concrete Youth - are planned for later in the summer. All have been made possible by this donation.

Mark Tattersall, artistic director, said: "Providing a theatrical experience for those with complex needs is vital but costly due to the small audience numbers involved. This generous donation will enable us to bring not one but two specialist theatre companies to Dorset in 2022, and we are incredibly grateful to the Rotary."

Dorchester Arts also raised more than £500 as a result of the Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Christmas raffle this year, which will support its adult drama group, Connect.

Roy Chapman, chairman of the Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Club, said: "Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary Club is very pleased to provide entertainment for youngsters with profound and multiple learning difficulties.

"We have been able to do this due to the generosity of the Dorchester public in supporting our Christmas sleigh collections in South Street."
