Dorchester 20mph ban looks set to be scrapped

PLANS for a blanket 20mph speed limit look set to be abandoned following public opposition.
Almost all of Dorchester would have been covered by the proposed limit, but the idea is now likely to be dropped in favour of a more targeted approach.
Town councillors are being asked to consider a revised scheme focusing on school areas within the town.
A town council report said: "The consultation findings indicate that there is no clear consensus in support of implementing a blanket 20mph speed limit across the whole of Dorchester.
"Whilst the results demonstrate overall opposition to the town-wide proposal, the qualitative responses highlight a more nuanced picture, with some respondents expressing support for lower speed limits in specific locations, particularly around schools and areas where pedestrian safety is a concern."
More than 60 per cent of all respondents said they were opposed to a blanket 20mph limit for the town.
The proposal will be discussed at a meeting of the town's planning and environment committee on Monday evening.
It follows a six-week public consultation that included a survey sent to every household in the town.
Of the 3,800 surveys completed, nearly 2,700 residents raised concerns about some aspects of the plan.
Respondents used the survey to share broader views on road safety, including issues such as speeding, dangerous driving, and difficulties for pedestrians and cyclists.
Many also mentioned congestion, delays, and the potential impact on bus services and journey times.
Opponents of the blanket 20mph limit were generally supportive of targeted restrictions in sensitive areas.
These included streets near schools, residential areas, junctions, and other places considered high risk.
Some residents felt certain roads were already difficult or unsafe to cross and would benefit from lower speeds.
However, many feared the scheme would increase congestion, lead to rat-running, and cause longer journeys.
There were also doubts about how the limit would be enforced and whether drivers would comply.
Areas of particular concern included Poundbury, High West Street, Middle Farm Way, Bridport Road, Weymouth Avenue, and Trinity Street.
