Warning over potential bonfire at park
By Ted Peskett - Local Democracy Reporter 30th Oct 2026
DORCHESTER residents have been warned not to build or light a bonfire on a local play area because of safety and waste concerns.
Dorchester Town Council said it had learned of plans for a large bonfire on land at Elizabeth Place, which it owns. The council has not given permission and said the site was not safe for residents, pets or wildlife.
Ward councillor Les Fry said the bonfire had grown over the years, as people added fridges, sofas and tyres. He said this created a danger when it was lit and left the town council to clear the land afterwards.
Cllr Fry said: "Without a named organiser there is no one who can be communicated with for all the information needed to organise or support."
The town council said Dorset Police and the fire service had raised concerns because an unregulated bonfire could increase the demand on emergency services.
Cllr Fry also raised concerns about injuries if somebody threw a firework into the blaze, and about the town council's possible liability if something went wrong. The council said it was not aware of anyone organising the bonfire having public liability insurance or completing risk assessments to protect residents and their homes.
Cllr Fry said a bonfire could go ahead if somebody accepted responsibility, arranged insurance and provided a plan for construction. He suggested Magna or another housing association could take that role. However, the council's notice asks residents not to leave any material on the Elizabeth Place greenspace, or build or light a bonfire there at any time.
Concerns can be reported to Dorchester Town Council on 01305 266861 or [email protected].
