Dorchester Arts bringing line-up of shows to town this autumn and winter

There are still many shows and performances coming up this autumn and winter to delight audiences in Dorchester.

Dorchester Arts has a great line-up of live shows during October, November and December.

Jenny Eclair: Sixty! on November 5 and New Hardy Players' The Mayor of Casterbridge on December 14 and 15 at the Corn Exchange have both sold out, but jazz artist Byron Wallen's Four Corners has been cancelled.

A spokesman for Dorchester Arts said: "Dorchester Arts regrets that the appearance to Byron Wallen's Four Corners at Dorset Museum on October 15 has had to be cancelled.

"Conditions for touring artists remain difficult for a number of reasons and the tour, which was planned some time ago, is now no longer possible.

"We very much hope to welcome Byron back when conditions improve but as a rescheduled date could not be worked out at the moment, we will be refunding all tickets."

Budapest Café Orchestra

Sunday, October 17, 8pm, St Mary's Church

They're back with another blistering programme of traditional folk and gypsy-flavoured music from across the world. Evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires - plus a few surprises along the way - they are hugely entertaining and have immense skill and profound musicianship.

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman - On Reflection

Saturday, October 30, 8pm, Dorset Museum

Join this popular wife and husband duo as they celebrate more than 25 years of making music together. The evening promises to be a whistle-stop tour through their artistic journey to date.

Ninebarrow

Sunday, November 7, 8pm, St Mary's Church

Folk duo Ninebarrow impress us time and again with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Nominated in the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Best Emerging Artist and most recently picking up Best Duo in the Folking.com awards 2019, their latest album, 'A Pocket Full of Acorns' (released in March 2021) was released to wide-spread critical acclaim including coverage on BBC1's Countryfile and BBC Radio 4's 'Front Row'.

Moscow Drug Club 'Transcendent Troubadours of Gypsy Latin & Swing'

Saturday, December 4, 8pm, Dorchester Corn Exchange

Think 1930s' Berlin Cabaret, Hot Club de France, Nuevo Tango & Gypsy Campfire, and where Django Reinhardt & Tom Waits are having an after-hours jam with the local Tziganes. Combining their original material with songs by the likes of Jacques Brel, Leonard Cohen & Bertolt Brecht, they provide an intimate musical experience.

Opus Anglicanum - Medieval Carols

Wednesday, December 8, 8pm, St Mary's Church

Join Opus Anglicanum on a Christmas journey 800 years back in time, visiting entrancing music and words from our mediaeval past. Readings performed by BBC Radio's Zeb Soanes illuminate the surrounding music.

Mad Dog Mcrea

Friday, December 10, 8pm, Dorchester Corn Exchange

A unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and 'shake your ass' music. From self-penned songs of adventure, drinking, love and life, to traditional songs of gypsies, fairies, legless pirates and black flies – Mad Dog will never fail to capture you with their infectious songs.

The Nativity (Living Spit)

Saturday, December 11, 8pm, Dorchester Corn Exchange

With Living Spit's usual mix of silly songs, pitiful puppetry and more Biblical befuddlement than you can shake a figgy pudding at, Nativity promises to be a cornucopia of comic Christmassy crudeness that you'll never forget!

Five Star Swing at Christmas

Friday, December 17, 8pm, Dorchester Corn Exchange

Swing into Christmas with all your favourite songs from Glenn Miller, Sinatra, Basie, Nat King Cole. Five Star Swing really know how to jazz up those Jingle Bells! The band features Simone from the Ivy Benson Orchestra and Chris Smith (Jnr) composer and arranger for the BBC Radio Big Band, Herb Miller Big Band (Glenn's brother), plus Tony Bennett's trombonist. They have performed on BBC's Children in Need, Dame Vera Lynn's Charity Ball and Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Morgan & West's Great Big Christmas Magic Show!

Saturday, December 18, 2.30pm & 7pm, Dorchester Corn Exchange

Time-travelling magicians Morgan & West crash into Christmas with a show full of fabulous family fun, festive frolics and fantastic facial furniture. Magic, mystery, and merriment await in this fun for all the family in this utterly splendid (and totally silly) Christmas magic extravaganza!
