Dorchester Arts will be screening four unique cinematic experiences for art lovers this year, hosting four exhibition-based art films showcasing the work of artists Hopper, Cezanne, Cassatt and Vermeer.
The films are the brainchild of the company Exhibition on Screen which works with top international museums and galleries to provide a cinematic immersion into the world's best loved art, accompanied by insights from the world's leading historians and arts critics.
It is a wonderful way to visit major art exhibitions taking place all over the world, on the big screen and from the comfort of Dorchester Corn Exchange.
Screenings start this week and will be held as follows:
Tuesday, January 31 - Hopper, An American Love Story
Released to coincide with a major exhibition (Edward Hopper's New York) at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Perhaps best known for the modern masterpiece Nighthawks, the film traces Hopper's development from humble illustrator to iconic artist.
Tuesday, February 28 - Cezanne, Portraits of a Life
The genius of Paul Cézanne, filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with interviews from experts and curators from MoMA in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The film sheds light on an artist who is perhaps one of the least known and yet most important of all the Impressionists.
Tuesday, March 21 - Mary Cassatt, Painting the Modern Woman
Released to coincide with International Women's Day, this is an in-depth examination of an artist who made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, feminine and real - a major shift in the way women appeared in art.
Tuesday, April 18 - Vermeer, The Greatest Exhibition
In the spring of 2023, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will open its doors to the largest Vermeer exhibition in history, a major retrospective including Girl with a Pearl Earring, Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid, and Woman Holding a Balance. This film invites audiences to a private view of this major exhibition, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curator of the show. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Those who see the films will have a unique record of a great exhibition and in-depth account of the artists and their period, all for just £12 a ticket.
