An exhibition curated by the only engraver elected to the Royal Academy of Arts is coming to Dorchester.

From February 9 to May 1, Dorset Museum will be displaying 'Scene Through Wood', curated by Anne Desmet RA.

It marks 100 years since the founding of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920 and includes 120 works from University of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum's collection of many thousands of prints, plus loans from private collections by leading artist engravers from the 1790s to the present.

Anne Desmet said: "In curating this exhibition, I have chosen works that moved me; engravings that drew me in, demanded attention and lingered long in the mind.

"Scene Through Wood offers a visual feast of some of the finest wood engravings of the last 100 years and celebrates the extraordinary artists who made them.

"We aim to show the fantastic diversity of wood engraved prints in Britain over the last century, while also highlighting artist engravers from Europe, Russia, Canada, the USA, China, Japan and Australia whose work has influenced British engravers past and present."

A specially curated selection of wood engravings by Reynolds Stone from the collections at Dorset Museum will be displayed as part of this exhibition. From his designs for the £5 note and fine lettering on book plates, to his illustrations for the feminist poet and author Sylvia Townsend Warner, the display examines the skill of Stone's work. It will also bring together some of the tools and woodblocks from his studio in Litton Cheney.

Elizabeth Selby, interim director at Dorset Museum, said: "Dorset Museum is delighted to be showing this wonderful exhibition from the Ashmolean Museum in our Special Exhibitions Gallery.

"Featuring works from the pioneers of wood engraving and celebrating 100 years since the founding of the Society of Wood Engravers, the exhibition also gives us the opportunity to focus on the work of Reynolds Stone, who lived in Dorset from 1953 until his death in 1979.

"An exciting events programme will accompany the exhibition run, including talks and printing workshops."
