A new record studio in Dorchester is close to opening, and it has been fitted with the same cabling as the famous Abbey Road Studios.

Grinning Dog Records, a record label based in Dorchester, launched in 2020 just before the pandemic started by Nick and Grace Capaldi.

Nick is a singer/songwriter and has been in the music industry since he was 14. Having to travel miles to record in a high-end studio was time-consuming, tiring and expensive so, for many years, he has dreamt of owning a recording studio where he could record music and help others record theirs.

He wanted to build it somewhere local, so with his partner Grace and her sister, Amy, the dream has become a reality.

Echotown Studio is a purpose built, all-inclusive and accessible analogue and digital studio, housing a variety of equipment, including a 32 Channel SSL 6000E Desk, three tape machines - one being a Studer j37 - ATC monitors and a variety of rare and vintage microphones, amps and guitars.

The cables involved in the installation

Nick said: "Because of the amount of kit in the studio, the cabling install for the studio is incredibly complex and requires trusted professionals to make them.

"Whilst recording at Abbey Road, I noticed Van Damme provided all the cabling. After feedback from both our tech and SSL experts, we were confident that Van Damme was the right choice for Echotown."

The pair has also been working with Drake Music, which works to make music technology accessible to those with a disability, during the studio build.

The finishing touches are being made to the studio and it is due to open very soon - we will let you know when.
