Dorchester: Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival 2021 kicks off tomorrow

The Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival will once again be hitting your screens - starting tomorrow.

With Covid restrictions still in place, organisers decided to hold the event online again this year, but there's a lot to get involved with.

From July 16 to 18, there will be discussions, debates, radical history lessons, lots of music and all the best of the festival straight to your home.

Here's what's happening:

Friday

7PM - Change rarely comes without protest

Kicking off the 2021 festival, Campaign for Trade Union Freedom and The People's Assembly will bring you a 'bonanza of a discussion'.

It will link the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs with current battles over rights and how we build a better life for working people after the pandemic. There will be a mix of protest songs and speakers, including Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP, Billy Bragg, Keith Ewing, Marvin Rees and Sarah Woolley.

Saturday

10AM - 11AM - Resetting the world of work

Guest speakers review the issues facing workers today and explore how we can create decent jobs with more dignity and equality after the Covid crisis.

  1. 15AM - 12.15PM - All change for food production

Speakers will discuss the issues workers are facing in terms of the pandemic, Brexit, climate change and automations on the way we produce and trade food, with significant changes for the workforce and consumers.

  1. 15PM - 1.10PM - Dorset rally for slavery justice

The Tolpuddle Martrys' Festival will include two rallies and marches.

There will be a live streams of theses and speakers are invited to talk about the importance of slavery justice.

  1. 30PM - 2.30PM - Union priorities for the climate

Ahead of COP26, leading voices of the union and labour movement discuss our demands for a just transition with decent, green jobs at the heart.

3PM - 3.30PM - Tolpuddle! The Musical (a video extract)

The story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs and the injustices they experienced for simply forming a trade union is truly global. Over in America, song and theatre writers came together to create a musical production that tells their story from tragedy to triumph. Unfortunately, with Covid lockdowns, the production had to be suspended. However, performers from around the world have re-created key songs from the play for us all to enjoy for the online festival.

4PM - 5PM - Tackling racism

A panel discussion about tackling racism and hear from some of the young women who help mobilise Black Lives Matter events in the West Country.

6PM - 10.30PM - Music

Enjoy performances from Maddy Carty, The Barber Luck World Citizen Folk Band, Ngaio, Steve White and the Protest Family, Songs from the States, Anthony D'Amato, Crys Matthews and Carsie Blanton.

Sunday

11AM - 12NOON - Joan Maynard: passionate socialist

The story of Joan Maynard with her biographer, Kristine Mason O'Connor, and Barry Leathwood, former NUAW leader and TGWU national secretary.

  1. 50PM - 2PM - The wreath-laying at Hammett's Grave

Local union representatives will be remembering the Martyrs in a Covid-secure small wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of James Hammett, one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

2PM -The Martyrs' procession and rally

The village will be closed to outside members of the public but working closely with our unions, a limited number of local members from each trade union will represent and march with their banners so that we can re-create the procession as safely and as Covid-securely as possible for you all to watch.

The procession will also include big name speakers who will speak online or live from the march on why it's so important to commemorate the story of the six farm workers from Tolpuddle.
