Dorchester Town Council is to alert Dorset Council about what is said to be a dangerous derelict building off Bowling Alley Walk.

"It's completely falling down and is my opinion is very dangerous," Cllr Molly Rennie told the council's planning and environment committee.

The building has had many uses over the years, including by the Dorset Echo as its Dorchester office.

It was recently the subject of a redevelopment application for a new building on the site which Dorset Council rejected as being out of keeping with the character of the town's Conservation Area although some councillors welcomed the re-use of the site and the modern design.

Committee chairman Cllr Robin Potter told the Monday evening meeting that he will write to Dorset Council to warn them that the state of the building might warrant their attention.

Dorset Council has powers to ensure owners keep their properties safe and can legally enforce repairs, or demolition, should they need.

The building, which is now without a roof, was raised during a discussion on an application for the next-door building to be converted from two flats back into a three-bed family home.

Town councillors welcomed the conversion which will not see any changes to the exterior of the building.
