From Dorset with love - that is the message being sent from a hospital choir in Dorchester to friends in Cherkasy, Ukraine.

In a church once destroyed by war, the Dorset County Hospital choir have been singing a traditional Ukrainian lullaby for friends in the midst of conflict, as featured this week on BBC Spotlight news.

The choir's artistic director, Kathie Prince, said it seemed fitting to sing a lullaby because of the ongoing link between the children's ward in Dorchester and the children's hospital in Cherkasy.

"It's a gesture from us to say this is to you with love - we are thinking of what is going on in Ukraine. We can't be there but we are sending heartfelt wishes to you," she said.

The song, 'The Dream Passes by the Windows', is translated from the Ukrainian 'Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon'.

St Nicholas' Church in Moreton, near Dorchester, was itself bombed during WWII and rebuilt after the war with engraved glass windows by the artist Lawrence Whistler.

Julia Brovchenko, visiting on a brief visit from Cherkasy, said people in Ukraine had taken comfort from the support shown by people in the UK, adding: "I believe this song, this lullaby will become a great support for Ukrainian people."

Children's services consultant Phil Wylie said Dorset County Hospital's 20-year-old link with Ukraine was going strong.

"With the links that we have, the obvious thing was to send them medical supplies of things they were specifically short of so we have sent out about three shipments do far and I'd like to thank everyone who has contributed." he commented.

The choir will also be singing their song for Ukraine in a free concert at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dorchester on Saturday, December 17 at 4pm.
