Leaning wall of Dorchester is legacy of the Tree of Heaven

By Trevor Bevins - Local Democracy Reporter   31st Dec 2025

A LEANING Dorchester wall could be demolished and rebuilt after its foundations were undermined by tree routes.

The wall at South Walks Road, near the town's Fordington Field, shows signs of cracking, a lean, and has been held together with webbing.

An application to Dorset Council for planning permission to demolish and rebuild says the current structure is 'potentially dangerous'.

An application for the work at No 28 says : "The project will involve demolishing a 4.8 m section of the existing boundary wall together with the adjacent upright brick pillar. Once the wall has been taken down we will remove the stump of the Tree of Heaven that previously stood at this site (taken down 2 years ago).

"The wall and pillar have been seriously disrupted by the tree's root ball and the pillar now sits at a potentially dangerous angle as a result. The root system is not dead and will need to be dug out to prevent further deterioration of the wall and pillar."

The application says that, as far as is practical, the existing bricks will then be re-used to rebuild the wall and pillar.

"Once the stump is removed, there may be a requirement to reinforce the foundations at the back of the wall as taking away the stump will leave a void."

The application (P/HOU/2025/06582) is currently open for comment.
