Machines go as Dorchester bank moves on. Planning update.

By Trevor Bevins - Local Democracy Reporter 13th May 2025

LLOYDS Bank in Dorchester has been given permission to remove three cash machines from its wall in Cornhill, when the branch closes later next month.

A planning request, approved by Dorset Council, will allow for the removal of the machines with the gaps to be infilled with matching stone.

The application also allows for bank signs to be removed from the building with minor repairs made.

Lloyds has occupied the building, on the corner of Cornhill (South Street) with High West Street, since 1914, taking it over from the former Wilts & Dorset and Williams & Co banks.

Dorchester Town Council had objected to the removal of the machines, claiming it would disadvantage residents. Lloyds has pointed out that there are other cash machines and bank and building society branches remaining in the town.

The branch is expected to close on June 19 with the nearest, remaining LLoyds, in Weymouth.

The details of the application and two other applications for town centre premises can be viewed on the Dorset Council website using the references, below.
