An exhibition of posters, pledges and artwork by students expressing their thoughts about the environment will be going on display.
'Plastics are not Fantastic' features artwork created by students on various courses at Weymouth College to raise awareness of the ongoing climate emergency, and will on display at Dorset Museum in the Alice Ellen Cooper Dean Community Space from June 20.
Sixty-four students contributed ideas and created posters during the 2021 COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow and formed part of a competition at the college.
The students used a variety of creative styles and different media, including illustration, printmaking and collage.
In particular they focused on the dumping of plastics in the ocean, deforestation, the extinction of rare species, rising sea levels and most importantly, the pressing need to take preventive action before it becomes too late.
Peter Vowles, student liaison officer at Weymouth College said: "The climate change poster competition was part of the college's environment week, held during the second week of the COP Conference in November.
"We had over 64 entries from students right across the college and it was very difficult to pick an outright winner.
"The judging panel was very drawn to the winning entry, 'You are the voice of the ocean', a group piece by students on the Next Steps Independent Living course. It makes a strong point, makes you aware if the destruction to the sea creatures but it also makes you smile."
The winning poster can be seen on display alongside a selection of posters and artwork. Admission is free.
The artworks form part of the Create and Collect project, a series of community engagement activities with young people. Led by the four partner museums of the Wessex Museums Partnership, including Dorset Museum, young people expressed their concerns on environmental issues and the climate emergency.
The materials used for installing this exhibition are recycled or from sustainable sources.
