A NEW SPORTS BAR could be opening on the approach road to Dorchester's West railway station.

Dorset Council has allowed a change of use application for a first-floor retail unit at Great Western House, previously used as a cycle shop.

The proposal for the 350square metre space was submitted by Mr Phil Campbell of Dorchester-based D1 Bars & Leisure.

He says the bar is likely to employ two full-time and fiver part-time staff and is planning to open from 11am until midnight throughout the week.

No material changes are proposed to the outside of the building, built in the 1980s, other than signage, with the existing retail uses remaining on the ground floor, including a drinks outlet and an electrical shop.

Entry to the upstairs bar will be a single door and stairs mid-way between the two ground floor businesses.

A drawing of the bar area shows three snooker tables, three pool tables, five areas for darts, a kitchen and bar with table seating for around 40 people.

No negative comments had been received by Dorset Council about the proposal.

A Crossways resident had written in support, saying: "I believe this is a great idea! There's not much in the town for the younger generation to do. This will also help keep them out of trouble."

Another, from Poundbury, said: "Such a good idea. Be amazing to have a snooker club darts and pool back up here."

Dorchester town council's planning and environment committee had raised no objection.
