According to reports around 1,000 ticket offices could be at risk including Dorchester South as rail bosses look to modernise the network.

Local members of UNITE Community Dorset Branch were among those taking part.

South Western Railway told Nub News that discussions are "going on" at a national level about the future of the railways, adding: "No decisions have been taken about the closure of any ticket offices across our network.

"If there were any proposed changes to ticket office operations, this would need to be announced and undergo a statutory consultation before any final decision could be taken."

A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson commented: "The RMT leadership is misleading its members and the travelling public. While we are looking at how we can move some staff from behind the glass and into other areas of the station, recognising that ticket office sales have reduced from 82% to just 13%, no final decisions have been made.

"As part of our discussions with the unions, we want staff to be more visible and available to meet customers where they are – including those with accessibility needs – so we can improve services for all."
