The team at Dorset Museum is getting ready to open the new £16.1million redeveloped museum, but it is looking for volunteers to support the staff.

The museum is bigger than ever before and is looking to increase the number of volunteers in the following roles:

• Welcome desk: be the first to welcome visitors to the museum. This role includes supporting staff in the shop as well as promoting society membership and events
• Gallery stewards: This new role has been introduced to guide and assist visitors around the new galleries and spaces
• Visitor engagement and learning volunteers: Engage with and assist all visitors, including families and groups, with displays and activities
• Library supervisor

Gemma Hurlstone, visitor services manager, said: "We have many exciting volunteering opportunities offering you the chance to join a fantastic group of people.

"All volunteers will have access to an extensive training package and we are fully committed to supporting volunteer development and recognising their strength and engaging their interests."

Dr Jon Murden, museum executive director, said: "There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in your new museum.

"At the moment we are concentrating on welcoming visitors to our new museum, but we also have amazing teams of volunteers who support our staff in caring for, conserving and protecting the museum's collection of four million objects.

"Our volunteers help us make activities and events special and educational visits unforgettable."
