Security is to be improved at Dorchester's Hawthorn Road allotment – following a series of thefts and vandal attacks.

The area, which has a public path through it between Poundbury Crescent and Hawthorn Road, remains the only allotments in the town which are not fenced off.

Town councillors have now agreed to install four-foot fencing which will offer some protection to the plots while maintaining the footpath.

They heard that during the past years vegetables have been stolen from the allotments with sheds burnt to the ground.

Allotment holders on the site have been consulted about the proposal and support it.

The total cost has been put at just over £3,000 with the work to be carried out by the town council's outdoor services staff.
