Dorchester Police are urging residents to be vigilant when walking their dogs after a man appeared to be whistling for a dog that did not belong to him.

Officers attended the incident on the fields opposite Poundbury cemetery yesterday (Thursday) at around 12.45pm.

A spokesman for Dorchester Police said: "There was a report of a suspicious male who appeared to be whistling for a dog that did not belong to him.

"A search of the area was conducted but it is believed the male left in a vehicle prior to our arrival.

"Please be vigilant whilst out walking your dogs. Keep your dog close to you at all times. Make sure your dog has a good recall if you let them off the lead. Keep some of their favourite treats in your pocket to entice them back to you.

"Don't leave your dog unattended anywhere. Make sure you have some up-to-date pictures of your dog from all angles, including any distinctive features. Make sure your dog is microchipped and all the details are up-to-date."
