Summer festival in remembrance of the workers is back on screens for 2021.

Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival will go ahead this year, however, due to the pandemic, organisers are taking a responsible approach and will remote stream the festival for a second year running.

Past events have seen up to 10,000 people turn out for a weekend of feel-good summer vibes and live music but this year the Trades Union Congress (TUC) who organise the event won't risk an outbreak of Covid-19.

The aim of the festival is to remember the journey of six workers who in 1834 formed a trade union in West Dorset. At that time, unions were legal but the six men were arrested and sentenced to seven years transportation for taking an oath of secrecy. The arrests caused widespread petitions and a march through London.

These marches still take place throughout the village of Tolpuddle which is home to the Martyrs Museum and where the festival is held annually.

Nigel Costley, TUC regional secretary said: "There are regrets that we can't be together live but we did a great online festival last year. It's not the same as having a beer in your hand in the field with the lovely atmosphere and spirit of the event but there are some benefits."

The online version of the festival in 2020 saw up to 22,000 visitors. More than double than is expected to attend in person and people logged in to stream the event and pay tribute.

The festival has seen speakers such as Jeremy Corbyn in previous years, discussing the importance of the roles that unions play for workers across the country.

Nigel isn't in a position to announce acts or confirm a date for the festival which is usually held in July, but he can say there will be a wide mix of artists with some American musicians, international speakers and a global mix of short films.

There will be no costs for tickets to the streamed event but all donations are welcome.
