The Tiger Who Came to Dorchester!

By Francesca Evans 12th Mar 2023

Shire Hall Museum in Dorchester is launching a new exhibition celebrating the work of one of Britain's best known children's author-illustrators, Judith Kerr.

Opening on Thursday, March 16, The Tiger Who Came to Tea will fill the exhibition room at Shire Hall Museum, commemorating the centenary of Judith Kerr's birth and celebrating her incredible contribution to children's literature

The Tiger Who Came to Tea exhibition, originated by Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children's Books, features high quality facsimiles of Judith Kerr's original illustrations from the Seven Stories collection and promises to re-introduce the beloved picture book to a new generation of family audiences.

Alongside facsimiles of original artwork, notes and sketches, children will enjoy stepping into Sophie's kitchen to have tea with a life-size tiger.

Nina Corey, director at Shire Hall Museum, said:"We're so excited to have The Tiger Who Came to Tea exhibition at Shire Hall Museum! It's such a well-loved book and we're looking forward to giving our visitors the chance to step into Sophie's kitchen.

"It is particularly special to us as 2023 is the centenary of Judith Kerr's birth, and the exhibition will also explore her extraordinary life."

Alongside the exhibition, Shire Hall Museum will be running a series of family-friendly events including craft activities, interactive trails and the chance to have tea with a tiger!

The museum will also be offering learning sessions for schools and nurseries.

The town is also getting behind the exhibition, with several local businesses decorating their windows with a Tiger Who Came to Tea theme.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea is at Shire Hall Museum from March 16 to May 20. Entry to exhibition is included with a museum ticket.
