Dorchester walk of the week: A ponder around Poundbury

By Lottie Welch

14th Jul 2021 | Local News

Every week we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you will be able to receive the walk first every Friday and be able to enjoy it over the weekend.

This week's walk takes in a 2.2mile route around Poundbury, taking around an hour and is of an easy walking level.

Start at The Great Field and pass the Pavilion on the Park with it on your left, following the gravel path. Go around the play equipment to the right and continue following the gravel path.

Continue along this path and at the T-junction, take the right-hand path before going through two metal gates onto the road.

Turn left onto the road and opposite the entrance to Poundbury cemetery there is a gate, go through it and turn left to go through a green gate. Keep to the left-hand as you walk through the field, following a dirt track.

Follow the path to the end, going to the left and out of the gate onto the road. On the opposite side of the road and just down to the right, there is a footpath, go down there and follow it adjacent to the main road.

Continue along this path until it meets a road, cross it and go down the footpath opposite. You will then come out on Great Cranford Street and Dunnabridge Square. Cross the square and go down the road past Oakley Court, turning left at the end of the road.

Follow the pavement and walk into Queen Mother Square. There are a lot of places to eat, drink and shop in Poundbury, take a while and have a look around.

Walk through Queen Mother Square and stay on the same road and The Great Field will come up on your left.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.

Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.

Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
