'Disgrace to Dorchester' railway bridge has new lease of life

By Lottie Welch 3rd Mar 2022

What a difference a lick of paint makes.

A rusting rail bridge, described as a "disgrace to Dorchester" has been rubbed down and repainted by Network Rail.

Town councillors and the West Dorset MP, Chris Loder, had called for the work to be carried out after years of neglect.

The brown-stained and flaking corrugated metal bridge, next to Maumbury Rings, one of the of the town's main tourist attractions, is one of two bridges where there have been calls for an upgrade.

The other is on Alington Avenue which has rusting cladding over the original, ornate, structure, but which has not been improved.

Town and Dorset Cllr Stella Jones claimed last year that the metal coverings on both bridges were put up as a cheaper option to carrying out repairs and maintenance to the original bridge structures behind.
