The former home of the top-rated Dorset restaurant is likely to become a takeaway.

Sienna in High West Street near the Top o' Town roundabout was originally run by Michelin-starred chef Russell Brown before it closed in April 2014, 12 years after it first opened.

Now it looks likely to change from Michelin to Madras.

In its time it was the rural county's only Michelin-rated restaurant and received rave reviews, including AA recommendations, although was severely limited for space with just 15 covers and a kitchen not much bigger than most people have in their homes. It received the Michelin star in January 2010 but Mr Brown decided not to renew the lease for the building less than five years later.

The building, and its name, were later taken over by 2013 MasterChef semi-finalist Marcus Wilcox with Covid finally putting paid to the business and the young chef, still in his 20s, moving back to the Rose and Crown at Trent near Sherborne.

The new application for the premises, which is within the Conservation Area and dates from the 17th century with flat above, asks that it be changed into an Indian and Bangladeshi takeaway restaurant. It has been submitted by Mr Kamal Ahmed with comments on the application remaining open until the first week in November.

A planning agent for Mr Ahmed says the total internal space of the building is 40 square metres and that the external appearance and internal layout will remain largely unchanged with the Sienna name being replaced by a similar-style sign bearing the name Radhuni, a Bengali word for wild celery.

The business has been on the market for rent with agents Maxgate Properties.

The planning application says the new business if approved, plans to be open daily from 5pm to 10pm.

In recent months several other shops or offices in the street, including Nos 51 and 54, have been granted permission to change from businesses to flats.

Permission has also been given for a now closed nearby Indian restaurant, just one building away, on the western side of the barbers' shop, to be redeveloped as apartments after the demolition of the building. The site was once Dorchester's main nightclub and prior to that a community hall.

Comments on the takeaway application, Dorset Council reference 2022/06018, can be made until November 4th.
