Two friends who met as neighbours have opened a care company in Poundbury.

Ed Williams and Ralph Solomon have registered Good Oaks Home Care Dorchester and Weymouth with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the governing body in charge of care quality.

Based in Burraton Square, the Good Oaks team provides live-in and visiting care for people in their own homes across the area, including Fordington, Poundbury, Weymouth and Bridport.

Co-directors Ed and Ralph have been friends for several years and both have parents in their 80s, so are aware of the needs of the elderly.

Ed is an educator and Ralph was in the hotel business and he recently came out of retirement to lend his expertise in starting up the business.

Ed said: "We think there's a huge need for home care in the West Dorset community.

"The pandemic has made us realise that quality of life and wellbeing is hugely important. There are many older people that need support to help maintain their quality of life.

"We wanted to contribute to the elderly community in a positive way and make a difference in people's lives. It's about preserving that quality of life and wellbeing and letting people lead independent lives in their own homes for as long as possible."

He added: "Now that we have the CQC registration, it's about going out into the community and saying, 'we are here to help, here's what we can do to make life a little bit easier'.

"We have a team of empathetic carers and we look forward to welcoming new people who have the same ethos as our team."
